Jałowcówka- past and now
- Szczegóły
One of yougest herd were formed on Western Pomeranian area. Group was made by one of action through the LIFE project "Diversification and development bison population on north-western Poland". The "ancestors" of Jalowcówka were bison from Mirosławiec and Military Area Drawsko herds (kind of genetic buffer for this groups). The adaptation pen was build in Forest District Drawsko, on a mid-forest clearing, near little pond. That area were unusual because long time ago there was calk mine. Nobody knows exactly what size the excavation was. In the past people extracted chalk and left behind this place, through the time hollows were cover with a moss duvet and all kinds of vegetation. The only sign of the human presence were small, muddy ponds, which, despite their size, are very dangerous. During the adaptation period, a newly created herd often wandering through these areas, often in water up to the waist. Unfortunately, the two cows were not very lucky and drowned in the swamp. Despite this sad episode, other animals continued to pass through similar areas, this time being more careful. Creating a new herd was very interesting in terms of observing the behavior of the bison. One of the cows decided to "ignore" the new company and wandered to Stargard - but that's another story. Today, the bison from Jałowcówki are doing well, the group is constantly developing and we see how the bulls from Mirosławiec and Poligon join the group in the heat season (the "buffer" effect). Below we present the gallery from the time of creation, observation and the current state of the Jałowcówka herd.
